imagining the garden

Andrew Cooks creates dreamlike imaginings that connect to actual places and experiences.

Cooks’ vocabulary of forms merge Persian and French formal gardens, with textile and ceramic patterns. Floating over these images are silhouettes of figures at leisure.  Seasonal changes play an integral part in this ongoing project.  The suggestion of time passing is enhanced by the placement of the paintings within a seasonal context.  As the viewer moves from the Autumn paintings to the Winter paintings and on to Spring paintings, there is a sense of transition, from decline to decay to growth.

The sense of ‘place’ is very important and Cooks’ use of specific locations is a way of anchoring particular works to ‘a’ place.  Further connective layers of meaning are provoked by applying fragments of text.

Most recently, in a series of nine decorative panels made for the North Gallery of Glyndor House at Wave Hill in New York City, the artist inserted parts of the Wave Hill garden plan and selected plants to enhance the works overall ‘sense of place’. This location was made specific by using the longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates of Wave Hill in the work. Together with maps and the coordinates of the cities of Shiraz and Paris on other panels, this connected Wave Hill to the overall context of Cooks’ Imagining the Garden project.

These elegant paintings are translucent, light and airy, and they do indeed evoke a sense of memory and the passage of time.

Andrew Cooks is an Australian who lives and teaches in New York City. He visits Australia annually and has recently commenced his PhD at Monash University
