Paintings by Michael Mark

American born artist Michael Mark explores the very essence of what it is to be a painter. Working with raw pigments and linseed to create his own paints he embodies the craft and tradition of painting that is so often replaced by convenience.

The alchemical process used to manipulate pigment gives intention behind Mark’s paintings that is expressed in formless color and light. These works float in the unseen and yet they hold a curiosity that is soft and almost familiar.

The absence of form, and the use of light, leads your eye through soft dark spaces then resting on delicate splashes of color. The innate nature of our mind wants to identify a landscape or figures in these works, however Mark’s expression could be that of a seascape, a bustling street scene or a simple object. A relationship between the viewer and the work is created through the ambiguous and the emotive. This is emphasized by the lack of defining titles, which offer no influence over, or disruption to, the viewer’s experience.

Michael Mark holds a Phd from the Victoria College of the Arts.  This will be his third exhibition at Jenny Port Gallery.
