If you were to get a tattoo, what would it be? Something Japanese is pretty cool. Perhaps some Kanji script, or an old-school dragon – either might display knowing worldliness coupled with equal measures of nostalgia and irony. Or perhaps something Afghani or Congolese is better – you know, you’ve gotta stay ahead of the curve.

I’ve often thought about getting a tattoo, but have never been able to get past the permanence of it all. I mean, what if I change my mind? If getting a tattoo is supposed to say something about me – to bear some meaning – then how can I be sure that that meaning, or the identity it’s supposed to affirm, won’t change? How do I know that the image I choose to get etched into my body won’t eventually seem naff, become irrelevant or passé, or worse still, take on a totally different meaning altogether?

But perhaps I’m missing the point (needle pun intended). Perhaps a tattoo is supposed to underline you at a certain time and place – to pronounce your identity at a momentary overlap of your space and the space of the world – to mark the space in-between.

Michael Brennan is a Melbourne-based artist and gonzo curator of sorts. His work typically focuses on perception, experience and the slippage between plural perspectives and different points-of-view. He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across the country and his work has been included in a number of significant prizes including the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, the Metro Art Prize and the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 2007 Michael was awarded an Australia Council for the Arts studio residency in Tokyo. His work appears in private collections in Australia, Europe and the United States and he is also represented in the Artbank collection.
